  • Renewability Power Pipe

    Post date: Wed, 06/22/2011 - 19:11

I recently had the opportunity to speak with a representative from RenewABILTY Energy Inc. about how their domestic hot water recovery(DHWR)system differs from others on the market.

Among the striking differences are the technical sheets that specify the efficiency of the pipe given it's length and diameter.
For those of you not familiar with DHWR the idea is that you recapture heat from flowing water before it exits the structrure to the sewer system. The two goals of the system are to recapture heat which is a function of surface area in contact with the incoming cold water and optimize heat transfer while maintaining flow rate.

The PowerPipe solves these issues by adding multiple concentric pipes around the exiting waste water and pre heating cold water destined for the hot water heater.

This is a product that in the $500-$1000 price range installed should be added to every new building that has a significant hot water use.

  • Cree's LED recessed lighting fixture replacement creates higher quality lighting than compact fluorescents.

    Post date: Tue, 01/06/2009 - 17:06

Using half the energy of a comparably bright fluorescent, the Cree LR6 replacement fixture provides higher quality light and is available in large quantities immediately.

An online calculator is available to determine if the high up front cost can be recouped in a reasonable amount of time to justify the up front installation.

  • Solatube: Affordable Natural Light Solution

    Post date: Sun, 12/21/2008 - 22:32

Available in diameters large enough to service up to 300 sq. ft. the the Solatube brings natural light from the roof to where you need it. A supplied tube up to 30 ft. long allows light to reach even the first floor in a two story house, assuming you have room for the tube.

Interior rooms where a window is not an option are a prime target for these systems. With features that allow the fixture to function as a light at night or dim daylight when too much is entering a room this fixture is sure to give you a new perspective on a dark room.

Available from $649 at a local retailer and expected to save about $4 per year by eliminating the need to 2 bulbs in the replaced fixture.

    Is it worth the cost?

If we factor in never having to replace a bulb, our reduced electricity costs over the life of the product (25 years) the cost certainly warrants the replacement of incandescent bulbs. Once we factor in the full color spectrum that natural light provides we definitely hit on a winner.
